General search tips

In no particular order...

  • Use the Getty Union List of Artist Names http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/ulan/ to find the accepted spelling of an artist's name.
  • Spelling counts.
  • Use quotation marks around a phrase... most of the time.
  • Often, there are alternative names.
  • Decide whether to include name of artist, time period, or location.
  • Sometimes less specific is better.
  • Ask your librarians if you aren't finding enough (or good enough) sources. They're here to help.
