ERH 215 - History of Art I: Interlibrary Loan

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan, also called ILL, is a wonderful service that provides the VMI community with access to the catalogs of thousands of libraries.

  • Article requests usually take about two business days from when you place a request. Usually you will receive a PDF file via email.
  • Book requests can take from a couple days up to weeks - depending on where it's coming from (it will come through the mail or UPS).  The loan period is also determined by the loaning library.

Library staff can help you with the Interlibrary Loan system. Just ask!

How much does ILL cost?

As a VMI Cadet or member of the faculty or staff, there is generally no cost for you to borrow materials through interlibrary loan.

Preston Library absorbs the costs involved in processing interlibrary loan requests. In order to maintain this free service, we ask that you only request items that you know you will use.

How to use Interlibrary Loan

If you have the citation for the item you'd like to request, you may log in to Illiad, VMI's online ILL system, and fill out a form for a book or article request.

If you are not sure of the exact item that you need, you can search in WorldCat Local (Look for the blue Request Interlibrary Loan button) or in the library databases (look for the button), or look for a journal/magazine title in the Journal Locator.
