ERH 379X Art of Medieval Europe: Interlibrary Loan

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan, also called ILL, is a service offered through Preston Library that provides the VMI community with access to the resources held by thousands of libraries. To request an interlibrary loan, you will set up a free account in Preston Library's ILL system, ILLiad.

  • Article requests can take a few hours to several days from when you place a request. Articles are usually delivered electronically to your ILLiad account.
  • Book requests can take from a few days up to weeks - depending on where it's coming from (it will come through the mail or UPS).  You will be notified when the book arrives and it can be picked up at Preston Library's Service Desk. The loan period is also determined by the library that owns the book.

Library staff can help you with the Interlibrary Loan system. Just ask!

How much does ILL cost?

As a current VMI Cadet or member of the faculty or staff, there is generally no cost to you to borrow materials through interlibrary loan.

There are costs for Preston Library to request and receive interlibrary loans on your behalf, and Preston Library absorbs the costs. In order to maintain this free service for cadets, faculty, and staff, we ask that you only request items that you know you will use.

How to use Interlibrary Loan

If you have the citation for the item you'd like to request, you may log in to Illiad, VMI's online ILL system, and fill out a form for a book or article request.

If you are not sure of the exact item that you need, you can search in WorldCat Local , which is offered as the main search box on Preston Library's home page. If the item you want is not available at Preston Library, look for the blue Request Interlibrary Loan button or in the library databases look for the button. Either of these should take you to the ILL request page.
