Professional Organizations

Join national and state professional organizations to keep abreast of career opportunities.

The professional association for civil engineers is the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society.  ASCE stands at the forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society’s economic and social engine – the built environment – while protecting and restoring the natural environment.

The Virginia Society of Professional Engineers (VSPE) continues the mission of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), which is to realize a simple but vital goal: create an inclusive, nontechnical organization dedicated to the interests of licensed professional engineers, regardless of practice area, that would protect engineers (and the public) from unqualified practitioners, build public recognition for the profession, and stand against unethical practices and inadequate compensation.  VSPE was established in 1936, to facilitate that goal on a statewide level.  VSPE is the only dedicated professional organization that represents and protects the rights of Professional Engineers before the state licensing board and the Virginia General Assembly.

There are state engineering professional organizations.  If you need help identifying your state's engineering society, contact a VMI reference librarian via email:

You can follow your profession by reading blogs, newspapers and magazines. An example of a newspaper is The Wall Street Journal.  Paper and online subscriptions are relatively inexpensive.  Most libraries can provide access to it.  You can also access the WSJ @

The magazine that covers all fields of engineering is ENR, or Engineering News-Record.  Preston Library displays the current issues in the periodical reading room on the 500 level.

As a Civil Engineer there are newsletters, magazines and journals published by engineering professional organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).  As a member of ASCE you can select to subscribe to particular titles in your field.
