Your Assignment

Greetings Cadets!

PAPER OUTLINE

Due: Thursday, March 6

Your task for this assignment is to create a comprehensive outline of your research paper. This will involve creating a formal outline with headings, subheadings, etc. and populating that outline with material from your primary and secondary sources. The idea is to give yourself a roadmap to guide your writing, complete with notes on the evidence you will use to ground your analysis.
Your completed outline must include at minimum:

  • Your research question(s), which by this time should be complete and reflect any modifications derived from your investigation of primary sources.
  • A one-two page, double-spaced, preliminary introduction that includes a thesis statement.
    • I know you will continue to revise this but attempt to state your argument.
  • Your formal outline including:
    • Section headings (such as “Introduction,” “Historiography,” major sections of your argument, etc.) You need AT LEAST five section headings.
    • Section subheadings (specific themes, subsections of your analysis, various sections of your research, etc.) You need at least ten subheadings.
    • Evidence to populate those subheadings including:
      • The secondary sources you will use to support your research under the relevant subheading. At least six secondary sources should be used.
      • At least two primary sources for each subheading in the body of your paper. These should not be repetitive.

Your outlines should include a minimum of five headings and ten subheadings. Please organize your outline according to the instruction above (i.e. start with your research question and work from there).
Format:

  • Essays should be typed, 12-point font, 1” margins, no cover page is necessary.
  • Double space entire outline.
  • Do not forget a Help Received statement.
  • Citations should be footnoted and formatted in Chicago Manual style, as should your bibliography
