Why use books?

Books provide in-depth information on broad subject areas. Researchers use them when they need:

Historical context or comprehensive background information for their subject area
Synthesis and analysis of events and information

Note: Often a chapter or two, rather than the entire book, are all that you may need.

Search Libraries Worldwide

Search most academic libraries in the United States. VMI's collection is small compared to the combined holdings of most libraries in the United States. NOTE: If we borrow print books for you, it could take 7-10 days to get here!

WorldCat
WorldCat is a catalog of library materials that lists the collections of 15,637 libraries in 107 countries. In addition to physical books, you will find entries for electronic books, journals, videos, music, and more.

To use Worldcat.org to borrow materials from other libraries:
1. Create an account with your VMI email address and set location to Lexington, VA.
2. Select the "View access options" button to the right of an item's detailed record.
3. Once selected, the pop up box, "Get it From Virginia Military Institute" with a link to Preston Library's Interlibrary link should appear.

Alternatively, you may access Preston Library's interlibrary form at: https://illiad.vmi.edu/ to initiate an interlibrary loan request.

Coverage: varies
Google Books contains more than 10 million full-text books and magazines that Google has digitized. If the item is digitized but still protected under copyright, then Google often provides you with previews or snippets of the item.
