20th Anniversary of September 11th

by Maj. Ashley Carroll on 2021-09-14T15:41:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

September 11th marks the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. Two VMI alumni, LTCDR David L. Williams, class of 1991, and William Mathers, class of 1962, were among the 2,996 people killed.

Over the years VMI has observed the anniversary of September 11th in different ways. On the 1st anniversary VMI held an event called “Celebrate America” which featured speeches by the superintendent, Lieutenant General Josiah Bunting III, and others that reflected on the events that occurred a year prior.

In 2017, the cadet ROTC unit observed September 11th by organizing a joint run on the VMI post.

Since 2018, a group of cadets, including members of the fire club, cadet EMTs, and leaders in the corps, have participated in a stair climb in barracks to commemorate September 11th. The participants march up 110 flights of stairs to replicate the 110 floors climbed by first responders in the World Trade Center.

A selection of books relating to September 11th can found on the book display located across from the service desk on the main level of Preston Library.
