Patriot Day commemorates the lost lives and sacrifices of countless victims, volunteers and service people on September 11, 2001, and in the weeks and months that followed. On this day, the American flag is flown half-staff at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings throughout the world. Many organizations and establishments observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM, the time the first plane hit the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
