The following VMI alumni were killed during the Global War on Terror:
- Ryan E. Doltz, VMI Class of 2000
- Sergeant Doltz was killed on June 6, 2004 in Iraq.
- James C. Edge, VMI Class of 1996
- Captain Edge was killed on April 14, 2005 in Iraq.
- Dale R. Griffin, VMI Class of 2003
- Sargent Griffin was killed on October 27, 2009 in Afghanistan.
- Joshua C. Hurley, VMI Class of 2001
- Lieutenant Hurley was killed on November 1, 2003 in Iraq.
- Charles W. Mathers, VMI Class of 1962
- Mathers was killed on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center.
- William L. McMillan III, VMI Class of 2008
- Specialist McMillan was killed on July 8, 2008 in Iraq.
- Luke J. Mercardante, Honorary Brother Rat, VMI Class of 2007
- First Sargent Mercardante was killed on April 15, 2008 in Afghanistan.
- Lowell T. Miller II, VMI Class of 1993
- Captain Miller was killed on August 31, 2005 in Iraq.
- Michael W. Newton, VMI Class of 2003
- Captain Newton was killed on June 11, 2011 in Afghanistan.
- Charles A. Ransom, VMI Class of 2001
- Captain Ransom was killed on April 27, 2011 in Afghanistan.
- Paul R. Syverson III, VMI Class of 1993
- Major Syverson was killed on June 16, 2004 in Iraq.
- John R. Teal, VMI Class of 1994
- Captain Teal was killed on October 23, 2003 in Iraq.
- David L. Williams, VMI Class of 1991
- Lieutenant Commander Williams was killed on September 11, 2001 at the Pentagon.
- Gregory R. Wright, Jr., VMI Class of 1995
- Wright was killed on December 7, 2005 in Iraq.
- Luke C. Wullenwaber, VMI Class of 2002
- Captain Wullenwaber was killed on November 16, 2004 in Iraq.
