More than 20 Virginia Military Institute (VMI) alumni are known to have served in the Mexican War (1846-1848). Robert E. Lee Mexican War Maps

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) was born in 1807 in Westmoreland County, Virginia to Henry “Ligh-horse Harry” Lee and Ann Hill Carter Lee. In 1829 he graduated from West Point, New York and served as a military engineer. During the Mexican War, Lee served as a Captain in the United States Army Engineers Corps.
