More than 20 Virginia Military Institute (VMI) alumni are known to have served in the Mexican War (1846-1848). The most detailed information is found in Appendix I (pages 513-549) of the book “The Military History of the Virginia Military Institute: From 1839 to 1865 With Appendix, Maps, and Illustrations” by Jennings C. Wise.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) was born in 1807 in Westmoreland County, Virginia to Henry “Ligh-horse Harry” Lee and Ann Hill Carter Lee. In 1829 he graduated from West Point, New York and served as a military engineer. During the Mexican War, Lee served as a Captain in the United States Army Engineers Corps.
